Varicose veins (varices) and their treatment

Varicose veins are not only cosmetically unpleasant, they also cause fatigue, congestion, calf cramps and phlebitis. At an advanced stage, skin changes and ulcers can occur on the lower leg, including the dreaded "open leg".

A qualified diagnosis is the prerequisite for a treatment plan tailored to the patient, which consists of a combination of several measures in the case of extensive varicose veins. Large, dilated varicose veins must be removed or eliminated to remove the congestion.

Our specialists have many years of experience with the various methods and check every new development to see whether it has been tested and is successful enough to be included in our program.

Our modern, minimally invasive procedures range from so-called invagination or PIN extraction to foam sclerotherapy and endoluminal CLOSURE procedures.

During PIN extraction, a probe, known as a PIN, is inserted into the vein trunk via a small incision in the groin or back of the knee and advanced to the first functioning venous valve. In the subsequent steps, the diseased section of vein is removed without damaging the tissue. The healthy part of the vein is left untouched.

In the CLOSURE procedure, a thin catheter is inserted through a tiny incision in the leg, which transmits high-frequency energy to the vein wall. The associated heating leads to the collapse and closure of the vein, which remains in the body. It is transformed into connective tissue and broken down by body cells.

Healthy veins take over the function of the eliminated or removed vein trunk.

In most cases, it is also necessary to remove side branch veins using fine surgical instruments. After the procedure, we apply a wrap bandage for 1 - 2 days, after which a compression stocking should be worn for a short time during the day. Short walks promote recovery.

We perform all methods under local or regional anesthesia and on a day-care basis, but also under general anesthesia on request.

The most important advantages of our processes are

  • Day clinic implementation
  • Local or regional anesthesia
  • Short recovery times
  • Resumption of normal activities within a few days and early exercise
  • Excellent cosmetic result with minimal or no scars
  • Early return to the workplace

Spider veins are usually found on the legs and are often cosmetically unpleasant. As spider veins can conceal a deeper problem in the larger veins, it is advisable to have a special duplex ultrasound examination of the venous system before treating the spider veins.

Spider veins are treated by puncturing the small veins and then injecting a sclerosing agent in liquid or foamed form. The treatment takes little time and is hardly painful. After the treatment, compression treatment should be applied for 24 - 36 hours.

After the examination, our specialists will discuss with you in detail the treatment options that are suitable for you and determine the treatment plan.
