Corrective procedures on the upper and lower lids

Patients are often bothered by their tired appearance. A detailed examination is required in this case, to identify its causes. Eyebrows sag over the years, which often happens unnoticed, but cause an excess of upper lid skin and soft tissue, resulting in a tired appearance.

In such cases, we perform an upper eyelid correction (incidentally, one of the most commonly performed corrective procedures) and remove fat deposits and excess skin, which has a positive effect on the entire facial expression. Eyes appear fresher and more youthful – for many years after. You will be able to see the final result achieved around three months after the operation.

Sometimes a simultaneous correction of the position of the eyebrows is necessary. Via a brow lift the eyes are opened more and the upper eyelids are relieved. This procedure can be performed in conjunction with an upper eyelid correction with no additional scarring, as the same surgical access point is used.

Fat deposits, dark circles around the eyes and excess skin can be removed during a lower eyelid correction. However, it should be noted, that some swelling in some people cannot be surgically corrected.

It is important to tell the doctor what specifically should be changed and the expectations concerning the results are. During a consultation you will be shown what is possible and feasible, as well as informed about alternatives and additional treatments which will be necessary to come as close as possible to the desired results.

The corrective procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and under local anaesthetic. Sedation is often requested by patients undergoing upper and lower lid surgery, which is also performed on an outpatient basis.

Goal of the operation

A fresh and youthful face.

Risks

During the consultation we will explain potential complications. As with any surgical procedure, risks include wound infection, bleeding, loss of sensitivity in the operated area or an injury of a facial nerve. The risk of complication is slightly higher for patients that smoke heavily, diabetics, those suffering from high blood pressure or any other patients at increased risk. Complications are extremely rare but, as with all surgical procedures, cannot be excluded 100 %.

Post Surgery

Swelling and bruising may occur in the upper and lower eyelids. Cosmetic sutures are removed after about five to seven days. For the first two weeks post surgery you should take it easy and not engage in any heavy physical work.
